All I want is a British Passport

ALL I WANT IS A BRITISH PASSPORT, written by Nadim Sawalha directed by Kristine Landon-Smith for Tamasha Theatre Company.

This one-man comedy is a look at the question of citizenship in the UK - a satire on the government, authority and immigration. It sprang out of my portrayal of Mr. Al Fayed on BBC TV in ‘Justice in Wonderland’ - a dramatised version of the Neil Hamilton/Mohammad Al Fayed libel trial.

Encouraged by the success of that programme, I set out to dig deeper into the bewildering relationship between this bizarre Middle Eastern character and the no less bizarre British establishment, and after meeting Mr. Al Fayed for coffee and cake in Harrods, I felt that both sides had great potential for comic interpretation. He is the ultimate gate-crasher in society. He uses his foreigness as an excuse to break the rules. To get away with things and take liberties the locals are not allowed to take.

The show is directed by Kristine Landon-Smith who is joint founder and Artistic Director of the production company Tamasha. Her 1996 production, East is East, in which Nadim created the part of George Khan, was nominated for an Olivier award.
